Analytical Steps to Comply with the USEPA's New 415.3 Method for
Total Organic Carbon (TOC) Analysis

Industry:
Environmental
Instrument: Phoenix 8000 Total Organic Carbon (TOC) Analyzer

Chlorine, hypochlorite, ozone, chlorine dioxide, and chloramines are the typical disinfectants used in the disinfection process of drinking water production. In the presence of Natural Organic Matter (NOM), these disinfectants will form disinfectant byproducts (DBPs), such as trihalomethanes (THM), and haloacetic acids (HAA). Examples of THMs are chloroform, tribromomethane and bromochichloromethane. Trichloroacetic acid, bromochloroacetic acid or dichloroacetic acid are
examples of HAAs disinfectant byproducts that may form. Although disinfectants perform an effective job against pathogen microorganisms, these disinfectant byproducts (DBPs) formed by them in the presence of NOM are potentially carcinogenic or they can be harmful to human health.

The USEPA Method 415.3 was created as a guideline for analysis of Total Organic Carbon (TOC), Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC) and Specific UV Absorption at 254 nm (SUVA) in source waters and drinking waters. As of January 4, 2006, 415.3 became an official method within the Federal Register.
