Instrument: 7000 Headspace Autosampler
Evaluation of Polymeric Home Repair Products Using High
Temperature Static Headspace Gas Chromatography
Static headspace coupled with gas chromatography (GC) is used to provide quantitative and qualitative information about the volatile components that are present in complex sample matrices. The analysis of polymeric materials is particularly challenging because many of the components of interest are trapped within the sample matrix. The Tekmar 7000HT Static Headspace Autosampler offers the capability to heat samples to 300°C. With its extended temperature range, this instrument allows a variety of analysis options for polymeric substances that was previously unavailable. This paper will present the results of applying high temperature static headspace analysis to a wide variety of different types of polymers such as those used in home repair products.
Home repair products comprise a wide variety of polymeric materials. Caulks, paints, adhesives, and glues are used by professional contractors as well as home “do-it-yourselfers”. The performance of these materials is often intrinsically tied to the properties of the polymer incorporated into the formulation. Previous application notes involving high temperature static headspace analysis examined a few specific types of polymeric materials. In this paper, representative samples of different brands and types of repair products are examined using a high temperature static headspace analyzer coupled with a gas chromatograph. At the higher temperatures used in these analyses, the polymeric components begin to unzip, yielding unique fingerprint chromatograms for each product.
