Quantitative Analysis of Residual Organics in Plastic Resins by Automated Headspace Analysis
Polyethylene is a commonly used plastic found in many everyday products. One problem with polyethylene-type plastics is that they can outgas organic compounds once they are synthesized. These compounds include ethane, ethylene, propane and propylene. A precise and rapid quantitation of these compounds is important for reasons such as toxicity or off-odors in food products, and as a check for explosive conditions in bulk polyethylene storage tanks in order to insure a safe working environment. Static headspace gas chromatography is a very sensitive technique for the analysis of these volatile and semi-volatile by-products of polyethylene.
