Total Organic Carbon (TOC) History
TOC is a popular analytical technique in water quality testing, as seen in many official analytical methods today. The United States Pharmacopoeia (USP), European Pharmacopoeia (EP) and Japanese Pharmacopoeia (JP), recognize TOC as a required test for purified water and water for injection (WFI). Teledyne Tekmar has a long-standing Total Organic Carbon (TOC) brand rapport from Dohrmann going back to the 1960s. Since Teledyne Tekmar evolved from Dohrmann, 5 generations of TOC combustion analyzers and 4 generations of TOC UV/Persulfate Analyzers have been developed for ultimate customer satisfaction. Each generation demonstrates vast technology improvements over its predecessor leading to today's industry-leading models: the Fusion, the Torch and the Lotix.
Teledyne Tekmar excels in this industry demonstrated through our dedication in resolving customer needs and concerns, and providing cost-effective beneficial products and services. These focus areas direct our development process and guides our application support to continuously renew our directions and goals. Because many companies face moderate workforce turnover rates that make easy-to-learn products essential to minimize lead times to productive personnel. Teledyne Tekmar has taken this to heart by spending significant time designing cutting-edge user interfaces that feel natural and are easy-to-use for the next generation workforce.
The Fusion was designed with the pharmaceutical and drinking water applications in mind. With its extremely low detection limit of 0.2 ppbC and its ability to handle high levels of carbon, acid, particulates, and salt, it is a very versatile analyzer for many sample matrices. The accuracy of the Fusion's UV/Persulfate oxidation is unmatched. UV/Persulfate has very little background carbon, lower than TOC combustion systems, making it the best choice for drinking water and ultra-pure water applications.
The Torch, full of helpful features and automated analysis processes, is our premium TOC combustion analyzer. For example, it practically does the work for you by making serial dilutions of stock standards to form a calibration curve and so much more.
In addition, the Lotix is an example of Tekmar applying customer input relating to difficult to analyze samples that traditionally would have been highly diluted or filtered in the past. With the vast detection range and robustness on the Lotix, dilution and filtration is no longer required for samples less than 20,000 ppmC and particles less than 0.8 mm in diameter. The Lotix, the newest combustion analyzer, provides a low-cost TOC solution while still providing you with the accuracy demanded by the toughest laboratory analyst.
Our customers are our highest priority. We are always driving the TOC product lines forward to provide easier-to-use solutions and more robust application for challenging sample matrices. Our support does not stop at the point of sale. We have a dedicated customer support team with decades of experience waiting to resolve your TOC demands and challenges.
TOC analyzers can measure:
- Total carbon (TC)
- Total organic carbon (TOC)
- Inorganic carbon (IC)
- Nonpurgeable organic carbon (NPOC)
TOC measurement involves:
- Oxidizing organic carbon in a sample
- Detecting and quantifying the oxidized carbon (CO2)
- Presenting the result in units of mass of carbon per volume of sample
Pressurized detection, or static read, is a technique used for concentrating the CO2 produced by the oxidation of the sample. The technique can be used for both qualitative and quantitative analysis. In this section the basics of the pressurization technique will be described. Click for more on NDIR Pressurization Overview.
